A note from Prairie Moon owner Rob Strom about Temperance Beer Co.

The fog of time clouds our minds sometimes but I believe we first met Josh Gilbert at Prairie Moon somewhere around April of 2010. The Evanston Home brew Club, under the direction of President Ted Perez and brewer and bar manager at the time Phil Zelewsky, would meet in Prairie Moon’s back bar at the old space on 1502 Sherman Ave. The Club members would bring their own offerings to sample and discuss as well as having a couple of pints from our many Craft offerings. Cesar Marron of Sketchbook was also in attendance. The club met on the first Thursday of every month and sometimes the crowd of home brewers and beer geeks was in excess of 60 or 70 guests, there was always enough suds for anyone who wanted to taste and explore this emerging craft, this was a golden age for Evanston breweries to be.
Josh opened Temperance in late 2013 with head brewer Claudia Jendron and asked us if we would host Temperance’s grand opening party, we were honored to be the kickoff spot! Our histories have been intertwined and our friendship has grown ever since. We have been so proud to have a brewery of Temperance’s caliber in our home town and quick to suggest a pint to any out-of-towner.
It was a pleasure to participate in so many events at the brewery and we remain so thankful that when we had to shut down for a few months before re-opening in our new space at 1635 Chicago ave. Temperance allowed us to offer pop-up raw bars and other pub grub at the brewery so we could stay in the public eye. Something that many people may not know is that when we were looking for a space to store almost everything from the restaurant for a couple months while we worked on the new space we reached out to Josh to see if we could use his space next door to the brewery, he so very graciously said yes. For this act of kindness and neighborly love we will always be in their debt.
We are so very proud and happy to host a final toast to great beer and great friends! Please join us on Friday, November 8 th all night from 3pm to 11pm for a “Temperance Old Skool Basement
Party”.
Let’s all raise a glass to a historical Evanston brewery, to the amazingly crafted and delicious Temperance beer, and thank them for the lovely memories they have provided for us all! Temperance Beer Co. will be missed!
