About Prairie Moon

Restaurant and bar in Evanston just steps from Northwestern University

In the heart of downtown Evanston and a five-minute walk from Northwestern University, Prairie Moon has been a neighborhood favorite since 2002—serving generations of guests from Evanston and across Chicago’s North Shore. Independent, locally owned, and proudly rooted here, Prairie Moon isn’t just a restaurant—it’s part of the fabric of the Evanston community.

Inspired by the rich culinary traditions of the United States, Prairie Moon brings the country to your table. From Gulf Coast spice to Pacific Northwest freshness, from Maine classics to California flavors, our scratch-made menu celebrates the diversity of American cooking. Rotating daily and weekly specials takes you even deeper—spotlighting regions, states, and stories that make each visit feel like a new discovery.

Step inside and you’ll feel the history. A 28-seat bar crafted from a reclaimed Michigan bowling alley lane and a vintage back bar from a South Chicago tavern set the tone—warm, storied, and unmistakably original. Rustic wood tables, a semi-private party room, and walls adorned with the work of local artists make up the spacious dining room. A couch and big cushion chairs offer a chance to relax in our cozy lounge area.

As one of Evanston’s longest-running restaurants, Prairie Moon holds one of its first liquor licenses. Evanston was home to Frances Willard, the national president of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union (WCTU), and was a completely dry city until 1972. Liquor stores were illegal until 1984, and Evanston didn’t see its first brewery until 2012. We’re proud to be a small part of the history of Evanston and serve a distinct selection of small-batch and craft beers, spirits, and wines.

Prairie Moon is proud to host an ongoing food drive supporting Connections for the Homeless and Indivisible Evanston.

So join us for a true Evanston experience with dishes like the Pine-Nut Trout, Cedar-Planked Salmon, a variety of Po’Boys, Brick Chicken, Shrimp & Crawfish Etouffée, and Martha’s Vineyard Salad, and the best burger in Evanston.

Whether you’re gathering for dinner, drinks, or a semi-private celebration, we’re always ready to welcome you like a regular—even if it’s your first time.

We look forward to serving you!

Robert Strom
Founder and owner

Born, raised, and residing in Evanston, Rob has played an important part in creating the Evanston and North Shore restaurant scene. With a culinary degree from Kendall College, Rob got his start at Evanston’s Davis Street Fishmarket. He then led the team that opened Tommy Nevin’s Pub, Merle’s Barbecue, and Pete Miller’s Steakhouse, all in downtown Evanston.

With a love and respect for regional American cooking, he opened his own restaurant, Prairie Moon, in 2002.
